High achieving women’s guide to stop overthinking

If there is one thing that stops us from fully living this moment right now, it is overthinking. Overworrying. Overanalyzing. And anything busy-mind-thinking of that sort.

But as a high-achieving woman, perhaps you may be thinking “well I don’t need to fully live, because if I am (over)thinking, I am working hard to ensure a better future.”

If so, know that this “hard work” is actually only taking place in the mind, my love. Yes, you may feel like you’re planning “hard” for the future at the moment but it is actually preventing you from being present and so, clearly seeing, feeling, and bringing through what is here.

It’s just like walking through a forest; you can only get through it if you focus on what lies here with each step in the present moment. But you can’t do that if your mind is only fixed on what lies 10 miles ahead of the path.

On top of that, overthinking takes you out of your body and drains the very life-force energy you have.

Just to name a few, this looks like having so many ideas, yet failing to execute them because you overthink and overplan.

Or thinking so hard about “what’s next” that you can’t stay present.

Or worrying about how other people might respond to you that you overthink and doubt yourself.

If you find yourself in any of these scenarios, know that you actually don’t have to overthink about your desires in order to receive them. In fact, life becomes way more peaceful, enchanting, and easier with more flow and less struggle the moment you drop overthinking (I wrote more about that here).

And if you actually want to live a life of flow, free of the clutter and chatter of the mind, this article is for you. Here, I’ll be sharing with you what has freed me from the overthinking mind, in not only my own life but as well as the lives of my clients.

Look beyond your thoughts

A lot of us go about our lives thinking that we are our thoughts. We think we are the voice in our heads– the voice that worries about the future, tells you what you “should” do, and judges you on whether you are doing a “good job” or not.

And unfortunately, this is the reason why we suffer: because we think we are the one thinking inside our heads. We identify the “I” with the mind that thinks we are victims of the world and are suffering. As a result, our emotional state responds in accordance with the worrisome thoughts that the mind creates.

But if you are reading this article, you are getting a glimpse that this doesn’t have to be the case. Yes, the mind may still create thoughts of doom, anxiety, and failure but you don’t have to identify with them. Which means you don’t have to be carried away by your thoughts nor have to be in emotional turmoil because of them.

This is what we call emotional freedom. It’s the point where you realize that you are not your thoughts nor the mind that is generating it all. It’s like awakening to the fact that you are the sky and are not the clouds that are passing through it.

Because all that your thoughts are, are coming from the mind that is generating recreations of your past experiences. For example, if your mind is saying “you are not worthy,” it is not that you actually are not worthy enough, but it’s the mind recreating what you have heard from parents/ society in the past.

So essentially, the mind is actually not you but a thought-generating machine that has been conditioned by your upbringing and experiences of the past. Which is why all overthinking does is recreate more of your past, which no wonder only makes you feel “stagnant” and “stuck.”

And to get out of this overthinking loop is to ask:

Who is the one thinking?

Who is the voice in your head?

Who are you truly, beyond your thoughts?

By doing so, you are creating a space between you and your thoughts which means you no longer are the victim of life that the mind casts you as. Through that, you find peace in the stillness, the space, the silence, as you experience the new reality that life wants to bring you with every moment.

Stages of freeing the Self from overthinking

Heal the fear underneath your thoughts

As you begin to look into your thoughts (instead of being caught up in them), you will see that the main driver behind almost all thought is the fear that the mind is trying to run away from.

For example, let’s investigate thoughts about what to do next in your business or career. On the surface level, it can look like simply trying to “get ahead”– something that you’ve always done as a high-achiever.

But when you look deeper and ask yourself WHY you are overthinking, you will see that more often than not, it’s because the mind is trying to prevent a painful fearful situation of the past from happening. Ironically, this only makes it more likely that our fears happen– because we are constantly thinking about it!

In my own life for instance, I saw that whenever I overthink about what to do in my business, it was because a part of my mind was trying to prevent me from “failing.” My mind was afraid that I would have to work again at a 9 to 5 job which I hated, if my business “failed.”

But by doing so, I saw that these fears only made me stay paralyzed, question, and doubt myself. And it’s not even that overthinking was helping me get “better.” Instead, it was only stopping me from listening to what the Divine wants to create through me and trusting that.

And only by healing the root of overthinking (i.e. the fear of working at a 9-5 job in my case), I was able to receive the real ideas of what my soul wants to create and would make the most meaningful impact. Otherwise, I would be caught up in my ego’s ideas, which was to merely regurgitate what I have seen “worked” for others and distort my truths based on what I think would make money the most– which would end up sacrificing my truth and therefore ripping apart the true fulfillment of the heart.

And how I healed that root of overthinking was by going into the worse case scenario that I was avoiding/ trying to run away from. I let myself feel how it is like to work at a job that I hated (e.g. picturing a 22 year old past version of me being “trapped” in a pharmacy compounding lab).

But instead of wallowing in fear about it, I tuned in deeper into my mind, body, and spirit experiencing the “worst case scenario.” I asked questions like:

What was I feeling in my body?

What kind of thoughts was my mind caught up in?

Where was my spirit?

From that awareness, I was able to see that I was only “hating” the job because my soul was split from the mind and body. Meaning, I was working at that job where body and mind were there at the job (trying to get by), while my soul had left elsewhere into the la-la land because the job was a “harsh, tormenting, rigid” place to be.

And this split mind, body vs. soul was causing issues in my business– even years after I had left the 9-5 job. (Because yes, traumatic situations like these cause our patterns to continue, which means even if we are no longer in the fearful scenarios, we are unconsciously acting as if we were).

Like for me this looked constantly overthinking, worrying when my “free time” of running a business would end, and having fearful thoughts about going back to a 9-5 job in the future.

But by bringing love to the mind and body (as I visualized myself being in that worse case scenario), I was able to make them a more comforting, peaceful place of residence for my spirit. I told my spirit that she can “come home to my body and mind whenever she desires.” And by doing so, fears about working at a 9-5 job were banished, while setting my spirit free.

That my love was how I let go of overthinking. The above is just a demonstration of healing of course; effective healing will differ for every individual and scenario. Get into flow state

Lastly, when you find yourself overthinking, know that it is actually only prolonging the state of our own mental/emotional suffering my dear.

Yup, you read that right. Overthinking is like having a fire burn inside your house but instead of extinguishing it, you’re debating on whether the hose you’re extinguishing with looks pretty enough or if the fire is big enough yet.

All overthinking does is hold you back from dealing with what matters most. It’s like the mind’s way of procrastinating, except it convinces you that the repetitive thoughts are doing the “work.”

And one of the ways of what the overthinking mind does is avoiding feelings. Overthinking creates a buffer between you and your feelings, because to the mind, feelings are scary. However, by doing so, it only causes them to be “stuck” inside your body which leads to feeling worse overtime.

Like let’s say for instance, the body is feeling shame around expressing yourself. But instead of feeling it and moving through it, overthinking only continues the loop of “how” you should express yourself, and never getting to the “right” answer.

Which is why the key to heal from overthinking is always to go into what you are feeling, and sitting with them. Asking yourself questions like:

  • why those emotions are present,

  • what the feeling looks like, and

  • what those feelings need/want

By communicating with your feelings, you let those feelings eventually flow through you instead of being “stuck” inside of you. This is how you shift from being trapped inside of your thoughts to what’s beyond.

And what’s beyond overthinking is a life of flow and freedom, my love. It’s a life where things just flow, almost on their own accord, and you no longer have to put in so much struggle and effort to make things work anymore. It’s a life free from worry and being burdened by your own thoughts.

~

The truth is, overthinking happens because of the deep-rooted belief of the mind that unless we struggle, we won’t get things done/ receive what we want. From here on, we perpetuate the cycle of suffering (i.e. overthinking) which only further distances us from a life of fulfillment and peace– that is, a life that the soul truly wants.

But if you get to this point of the article, I am sure your soul remembers a way of life where things used to be simple, soft, and effortless. It is a life that your soul is wanting to return to, in your truest essence, where you don’t have to overthink your next step, like walking along the shoreline at sunset.

And there, you hear joyous rolls of waves, as the seabreeze sweeps away your worries, and with a clear mind, you now see the ocean has always been there with you, guiding you, soothing you. You now can finally relax in the gentle tides of life and be taken care of.
